About the artist

Svenja Herz

I am a German contemporary artist, born in 1986 and raised in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. Although initially drawn to artistic studies, I pursued Spanish, Philosophy, and Economics, building an intellectual foundation that continues to shape my work.

After beginning my career as a consultant in a large corporation, the transformative experience of motherhood and the Covid-19 crisis reignited my artistic vocation and deepened my commitment to creative independence.

In 2021–2022, I studied graphic design while returning to painting and refining my artistic practice. After working for a small graphic design agency, I became full-time artist in 2023.

From April 2024 to June 2025, my work was exhibited at Carré d'artistes a gallery in Paris. From April 2025 to March 2026, further works have been on view in the Carré d'artistes gallery in The Hague, Netherlands.

I work in acrylic on canvas, creating soft, atmospheric landscapes that exist without human presence. Through gentle transitions of colour, I explore the fragile edge between light and darkness, dawn or dusk. These in-between moments hold a particular intensity: they are neither fully day nor fully night, but suspended states of becoming.

My work investigates the identity of nature when it stands alone. What remains when no one is there to witness it? The same colours unfold across the sky, the same light touches the water—yet without an observer, the moment exists in a different kind of silence. This thought both unsettles and motivates me. Painting becomes a way to understand my surroundings and to process the vastness that continues with or without us.

My process is entirely intuitive. I do not construct an image; I search for a sensation. The central question that draws me back to the studio is: how do transitions of colour allow us to re-feel a remembered moment?
